I was initially drawn to this because who doesn’t love a Southern wedding, but what is a Southern wedding (or wedding in general) without some drama?!
As Imani earns the Doctor of the Year award at her hospital, it’s a huge responsibility on her shoulders. She gets a text from her mother, who is getting married in one month’s time. As Imani travels back home, there’s some trauma she has to deal with. Cyril’s dad, Preston, is absolutely adorable, and so is Cyril. The bonding between Cyril and Imani was fantastic. Their chemistry was undeniable… even their parents noticed.
In small towns, secrets have a way of coming out but must also be dealt with. It can be difficult when everyone knows everyone. This was one aspect that I enjoyed about this story. I also appreciated that Imani was successful at her craft. I haven’t read many stories about Black women in STEM, and I thought this was refreshing. I thought Cyril was an absolute gentleman.
Some parts felt a little drawn out, but I enjoyed them nonetheless. Williams’s storytelling ability is phenomenal. I was drawn into the story within the first few pages; I couldn’t put it down. This was my introduction to Williams, and I can’t wait to read more. I would love to have this as an audiobook. I’m curious to see how different it would be… the personalities given to the characters by the narrator(s) versus the personalities I gave them. It would be so fun to see the difference.
