$2.00 Tuesdays (An apology!)

I am so sorry for being quiet last week! I was so overwhelmed with work that I let my blog fall by the wayside, and for that I am sorry. I know I usually do books that are $2.00, but hopefully this makes up for my absence!

Blurb: Under Umbrellas (Book 1) Sometimes the life you planned isn’t the one you get to live. Sometimes the pain of the past overshadows the future. Sometimes to start over you have to go back to where it all began.

This was how Joe Masters ended up back in New Hope, thick in his thirties with nothing to show for his life. He needed a complete overhaul, just like his father’s old house. Instead of a fast track, he had slowed down and was plodding through a ten year plan, which felt more his speed after his stormy relationship and bad break up. Maybe alone wasn’t so bad. Maybe there would be sunshine in his future.

Martha had weathered her fair share of storms in Vermont. Although accustomed to the cold, both the chill in the air and the cold shoulder in her marriage, left her feeling like she would never get warm again after her miscarriage. Martha’s search for hope brought her to New Hope, South Carolina, a small southern town full of charm and character. So focused on the move, she never imagined her husband would trick her into leaving and never follow. Strong willed and determined, Martha decided to do more than survive, she’d thrive.

Thrown together by chance, Martha and Joe would discover a connection neither prepared for, which would change everything. Inclement weather approached. Somehow, they had to find a way to survive together. After all…

Life is full of storms and love means sharing an umbrella.

Tempest Torn (Book 2) A night of passion. A raging fire. A home destroyed.

The sun returned and Joey and Marti felt they had turned a corner in their relationship. Only when they turned that corner, they ran right into the insurance adjustor, Finn. She wasn’t just any woman, though. She was the one woman Joey always believed he’d spend the rest of his life with, even though they couldn’t make it work. Soon it was obvious she didn’t merely want to adjust the value of the house, but remind Joey of the value of their relationship, and adjust his attitude about the future.

Suddenly, Joey struggled to choose between two women he loved: one who would never hurt him and one who constantly hurt him. He wasn’t the only one with a choice to make. After leaving her cheating husband, Marti vowed to never be with anyone who didn’t see her worth.

A tempest brews. A man is torn. A woman refuses to wait.

Stormy Surrender (Book 3) Six months have passed since Marti agreed to marry Joey. Despite her history, she’s having a healthy pregnancy. They finally have her house to themselves, and Joey has finished her To Do list. Life should be perfect, but it’s not. Joey is pressuring Marti to make it legal before the baby arrives, which is complicated by Blaine who refuses to let go, and Finn, who refuses to go away. Add in a town divided, a legacy to uphold, and a particularly vicious hurricane season, then hang on.

With all its force and fury, a southern storm could be so destructive. Of course, after the storm, the land is washed clean, which is perfect for a fresh start and a forever love, if only they will surrender.

I have been wary of the vampire genre since The Twilight Saga, however I was impressed with this story and the set up for the series. I will say it did start off a bit slow, but it was absolutely worth it. Cerissa is a scientist who is given a mission to infiltrate The Hill, a society comprised of vampires. She goes under the guise of wanting to build a scientific lab. Henry, a wine making vampire and a founding member of The Hill, doesn’t believe her, but they are drawn to each other. There is more to both than meets the eye… Can they figure out who is trying to assassinate the founders of The Hill before it’s too late?

The writing is fantastic. As I stated earlier, it does start off slow, but it gives you plenty of information to follow along. There were some things about the story line that didn’t jive with me, but it didn’t take away my enjoyment of the story. There were just some personal things I wouldn’t have stood for. Jenna Barwin is new to me and I look forward to the next story in the series!

Rating: 4 Stars

Genre: Fantasy

Believing she was dead, Maggie wakes up in a realm of the Sirens. The currency of choice however is magic; which Maggie does not want to give away. While in this realm, Maggie meets Bertrand, who has been there practically forever. He serves as a bit of a mentor for her. Through Bertrand, she learns she can travel to other realms and go on a adventure.

Through her adventures, she meets Tammond, in a realm on the verge of war, and they are in desperate need of her help! The attraction is immediate and I adore this.

The world and character development is great. There are twists and turns and all of this keeps you quite interested. It’s a quick read and a promising start to a new series.

Blurb: The latest novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Philippa Gregory features one of the most famous girls in history, Lady Jane Grey, and her two sisters, each of whom dared to defy her queen.

Jane Grey was queen of England for nine days. Her father and his allies crowned her instead of the dead king’s half sister Mary Tudor, who quickly mustered an army, claimed her throne, and locked Jane in the Tower of London. When Jane refused to betray her Protestant faith, Mary sent her to the executioner’s block, where Jane transformed her father’s greedy power grab into tragic martyrdom.

“Learn you to die,” was the advice Jane wrote to her younger sister Katherine, who has no intention of dying. She intends to enjoy her beauty and her youth and fall in love. But she is heir to the insecure and infertile Queen Mary and then to her half sister, Queen Elizabeth, who will never allow Katherine to marry and produce a Tudor son. When Katherine’s pregnancy betrays her secret marriage, she faces imprisonment in the Tower, only yards from her sister’s scaffold.

“Farewell, my sister,” writes Katherine to the youngest Grey sister, Mary. A beautiful dwarf, disregarded by the court, Mary keeps family secrets, especially her own, while avoiding Elizabeth’s suspicious glare. After seeing her sisters defy their queens, Mary is acutely aware of her own danger but determined to command her own life. What will happen when the last Tudor defies her ruthless and unforgiving Queen Elizabeth?

The best things happen while you’re acting…

The historic Madrigal theater, in the heart of downtown Wishful, is about to close its doors forever. A last ditch fund-raising effort, a production of White Christmas, is probably the only thing that could bring Tyler Edison back to the stage after all these years. Heroes need not apply

Riley Gower is no stranger to hard work. She’s queen of Doing All The Things—solo. And that’s exactly how she likes it. She’s not holding out for a hero. Will they be able to work through their complicated past to save the pharmacy before she’s forced to close its doors forever?

(Book Review) The Edinburgh Seer ~ Alisha Klapheke

This is my first book by Alisha Klapheke and her writing gives me life! It’s a wonderful blend of fantasy and Scottish culture. Aini works in a candy show with her father, but there is something special about the candy… but more importantly, there is something special about Aini. Aini’s secret could cost her life. Thane is a handsome son-of-a-gun with a high level of intelligence. He too, has a secret! Aini’s father is taken and she means to get him back!

I loved the alternate reality aspect to this story. Mix in Scotland (which is on my bucket list BTW) and history, and I. AM. YOURS! I will admit, I do judge a book by its cover. And this cover is fantastic. I know usually the blurb is what attracts people to the book, but for me it was the cover. The synopsis is great and the story kept me wanting more and needing to know what happens next.
