I finished this story a few days ago and my mind is still trying to process everything! Ash doesn’t people well, which is why she prefers science to people: People lie, numbers don’t. This entire time she thought she was working for the good guys, but just imagine finding out, not only do you work for the bad guys… you have two mates… and they’re right in front of you… in a rescue mission! Twin brothers, Russ and Dunn, have always grown up thinking they weren’t meant to have a mate because it would kill the mate. Imagine their shock when the person they needed most happens to be the scientist they are rescuing to save to the universe! I thought the first book was great, but this book is fantastic! There was humor (who doesn’t love nerd humor?!), romance, betrayal, and discovery. Gwen Cross was amazing as the narrator, bringing each character to life while reminding you of characters from the previous book. This book was absolutely fantastic and I’m glad I got the chance to read it! I can’t wait to read the next book!

Guest Post: End of the Lie ~ Diana Rodriguez Wallach

END OF THE LIE by Diana Rodriguez Wallach.jpg

TWO SHORT EXCERPTS:

“I wasn’t some princess in a tower. I knew how to fight. My place was right beside him, holding my own weapon. We would take this on together.”

“I wasn’t psychic, I didn’t have prophetic dreams of the future or believe in crystal balls, but that feeling people get when the phone rings and they know who’s on the other line without looking and they know it’s bad news. I believed in that. I’d felt it before—when my sister stood outside my bedroom door the night we thought our parents died.

I felt that way now.”

ONE LONG EXCERPT:

KEIRA IRENE PHOENIX [Looking directly into the camera. Footage released by Phillip Stone Media, Inc.]

“Hi. My name is Keira Phoenix, and I am the daughter of international criminals. In May, I was kidnapped by a man named Craig Bernard who, at the time, I thought was my boyfriend. We had met weeks before at a bar in Boston. The anniversary of my parents’ death had just passed, so I was upset when he showed up, acting nice. [She scoffs, rolling her eyes.] I invited him to a party I was hosting, then later that night he drugged me and took me from my home.

“I don’t remember the abduction—one minute I was in my bed, the next I’m waking up on an airplane, my head pounding and my hands bound together with plastic cable ties. [She rubs her wrists.] I was held captive in Italy for months, by armed guards, and I had no idea why. Eventually, I learned that Craig Bernard and all of the men involved in my kidnapping used to work for my parents. Only not as engineers for the Dresden Chemical Corporation. They were spies. All of them, especially my mom and dad. It turns out that my parents, along with Randolph Urban, CEO of Dresden, conspired to create a criminal enterprise known as Department D, which stretches back long before I was born. We have photographic proof that my parents were involved in the assassination of Italy’s Prime Minister Aldo Moro in 1978, and we have a journal, in my father’s handwriting, and eyewitness testimony that proves he was involved in the fake terrorist plot that defamed nearly a half dozen Islamic women in London two years ago along with the reporter who covered the story, Julian Stone.

“I believe I was taken by enemies of my parents as payback for their past criminal activity. Evidence of my time in captivity is undeniable. [For the camera, Phoenix holds up a proof of life photo with a church bulletin, and a posed photo of her body in the trunk of a car.] I was rescued by my sister, Anastasia, and her friends, who acted alone, because the Boston P.D. refused to listen to them, for reasons none of us understand. After my rescue, my sister, her friends, and I made statements to Italian law enforcement and the CIA, and I was instructed to stay in hiding for my own protection. But I was never safe. No one around us is safe. Tyson Westbrook, a seventeen-year-old friend of my sister’s, was murdered recently as a way to get to us, to lure me and Anastasia out of hiding. When that didn’t work, when we continued to fight, these people poisoned one us—Marcus Rey, son of Dresden executives Carlos and Rosario Rey.

“They’re picking us off one by one, and we don’t know how high up the corruption goes. Our parents were hired by world leaders to create propaganda for decades. Now these same people are covering up their crimes against us—including kidnapping, poisoning, and murder. They’re trying to silence us, take us out, and prevent us from exposing the truth behind Department D and its shell corporation, Dresden Chemical.

“We won’t stay silent anymore.

“We won’t stay in hiding.

“And we won’t trust law enforcement to act on our behalf.

“That’s why I’m coming forward now. I’m telling my story, in my own words. I need the world to know what’s going on, so hopefully no one else gets hurt.

“I’ve learned a lot about my parents recently, and you will, too, over the coming weeks. They did a lot of bad things. I know that. And they might even still be alive. [She cocks her head.] I’ve heard the rumors, like you, but I swear, if they are, I haven’t seen them.

“However, I am certain that the only way my sister and I will ever be safe is if we bring down the Dresden Chemical Corporation and its corrupt underbelly, Department D. We need to take back our lives and stop paying for crimes we didn’t commit.

“My name is Keira Phoenix and I survived Department D. But will you?”

Top 10 “Happy Feely” songs

By Diana Rodriguez Wallach, author of End of the Lie, book three in the Anastasia Phoenix series.

While these aren’t Happy Feely per say, they are some of the songs that inspire me to get in a writing mood. I have kids, which means I’m forced to write within the confines of a 9am – 4pm school day. Sometimes inspiration doesn’t strike on a schedule so before I sit down, I’ll turn up the music to get my creative juices flowing. Some of these songs are literally about writing and achieving a dream, others remind me of the plot I’m crafting, and others just remind me that I’m a tough chick who gets stuff done.

Here are some of the songs I’ve listened to over the years before writing any one of my six published novels:

  1. This Girl Is On Fire, Alicia Keys
  2. One, the U2 and Mary J. Blige version (has to be the duet)
  3. Don’t Leave Home, Dido
  4. Unwritten, Natasha Bedingfield
  5. Suddenly I See, KT Tunstall

People tend to hate what they fear. People tend to fear the unknown. In Six Fates Island, the witch hunt begins, and I don’t think anyone actually expected to find a real witch. Celeste Galloway and Fin Meath make the mistake of falling in love, and creating a beautiful child. Unfortunately, Fin’s father, Minister Gregory Meath, is a fear monger and has named Celeste a witch. If only he had left things alone! Deciding to burn Celeste at the cross, she used her dying words to leave a curse that will take 300 years to begin to break. Three tasks must be completed to break the curse… not impossible, right?

Present day: Kaida Galloway has been dreaming about a boy almost every day since she was 8 years old. They practically grew up together. No one understands her like he does, but she doesn’t know if he’s real or if she conjured him up from her imagination. Interestingly enough, Brady Meath has been dreaming of Kaida as well since he was young. Imagine how surprised he was when he sees her right outside his office window! Dreams do come true, but they come with a catch. Together, Kaida and Brady must complete their task to help break the curse… but losing their hearts to each other, that’s a different story!

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this story, but I’m in absolute love with this story! I can’t wait for the rest of the series. The three Galloway sisters, Ceara, Fiona, and Kaida are great characters. The Meath Triplets, Tristian, Riley, and Brady are fantastic. There’s mystery, humor, suspense, and love! I’m eagerly anticipating the next book of the series… but I’m also impatient! I’m looking forward to the next installment!

The Time Traveler's Guide to Modern Romance by Madeline J. Reynolds

The Time Traveler’s Guide to Modern Romance

by Madeline J. Reynolds

Publication Date: March 4, 2019

Publisher: Entangled Teen

Elias Caldwell needs more than his life in nineteenth-century England has to offer. He’d rather go on an adventure than spend one more minute at some stuffy party. When his grandfather gives him a pocket watch he claims can transport him to any place and time, Elias doesn’t believe it…until he’s whisked away to twenty-first-century America.

Tyler Forrester just wants to fall hopelessly in love. But making that kind of connection with someone has been more of a dream than reality. Then a boy appears out of thin air, a boy from the past. As he helps Elias navigate a strange new world for him, introducing him to the wonders of espresso, binge-watching, and rock and roll, Tyler discovers Elias is exactly who he was missing.

But their love has a time limit. Elias’s disappearance from the past has had devastating side effects, and now he must choose where he truly belongs—in the Victorian era, or with the boy who took him on an adventure he never dreamed possible?

I thought this was a very endearing story of two different time periods colliding. Elias Caldwell comes from the 19th century where everyone views him as a disappointment. Tyler is from the 21st century and his stepmother is wicked. Elias finds out after a dreadfully embarrassing incident, his grandfather time traveled and now is bequeathing the time travel watch to Elias so he can find his own adventure. I thought this was absolutely adorable. I think Elias may be my favorite character in this story. His personality and curiosity were endearing to read. Traveling from the 19th century where it was frowned upon to be yourself to modern day where it’s basically accepted can be jarring. It was nice to have Tyler there to help Elias adjust. I loved the dual point of views, but I thought the romance aspect was a little lacking. I think it would have been better for Elias and Tyler to be companions. I wouldn’t say the romance felt forced, I could see a relationship developing with a little more time. This was my first story by Madeline J. Reynolds and I’ll be adding her to my list of authors to look for in the future!
