Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard (The Sword of Summer) ~ Rick Riordan

I had this for a while, but hadn’t read it for fear of being disappointed. I love the Percy Jackson series (both of them), so I didn’t want to be let down… and I have to admit… I wasn’t! I will say that it had a “Percy Jackson” feel to it, but I didn’t mind that.

Magnus is a homeless teenager who is in danger and doesn’t know it. He must find the Sword of Summer, which used to belong to his father, Frey, ruler of peace and fertility, rain, and sunshine. Like all weapons described in any mythology, this sword has a tragic history… but more powerful than anyone could even know, even Magnus. Magnus comes face to face with Surt, the fire giant… well, things don’t go that great for Surt… even worse for Magnus. Surt wants to start Ragnarök sooner than it should be. (There’s no actual scheduled date for this event, but it is inevitable). If Surt gets his hands of the Sword of Summer, Ragnarök will be started with one event… the releasing of Fenrir. Magnus, along with friends, must stop this from happening!

You meet some very interesting characters along the way. Thor loses his hammer… again. Loki is as sneaky as you think he is. (It helped that I read his character with Tom Hiddleston in mind. Thanks Marvel!) There’s a few Annabeth Chase sightings which was awesome… it helped that Annabeth and Magnus are cousins. I think it will be very interesting to see the crossover (if there is one) with Annabeth being the daughter of Athena and Magnus, the son of Frey. It was interesting getting to learn about Norse mythology with this story. I was already knowledgeable with Greek, Roman and Egyptian mythology (prior to Rick Riordan), but this piqued my curiosity of Norse mythology… beyond Thor and Loki. I can’t wait to read the next book!

Summertime Madness Book Tag

Emalie tagged me for this, thank you 🙂 and without further ado here is my post .

1. Show a book with a Summery cover! i.e Sun, Beach etc.

I could show you a couple of books with a winter or fall theme on the cover, but summer… I guess this has to do it. Two girls outside eating ice cream… that counts, right?

2. Pick one fictional place that would be the perfect destination for your Summer Vacation!

Doon (Scotland) from DOON. I would love to be part of that town for a while (or forever).

3. You’re about to go on a flight to your Summer Vacation. But you want to read a book that lasts for the whole flight so what novella do you choose?

Something from my TBR list and I have a Kindle, so I don’t have to choose. I can just pick what I feel like reading. For an actual book I would pick something by Jennifer Crusie, Jennifer L. Armentrout, Vonnie Davis, or Kelly Moran.

4. You have a case of Summertime Sadness what happy book do you pick up to shine a smile on your face?

A book by Rick RiordanBet Me by Jennifer Crusie or Caedmon’s Curse by AJ Nuest.

 5. You’re sitting at the beach all alone…which fictional character would be your beach babe?

Prince Caedmon from Rowena’s Key by AJ Nuest or Daemon from Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I can’t really decide. Can I just pick both?

6. To match your ice cream you want an icy cool sidekick! Which fictional sidekick do you pick?

I would choose Rhys from A Furious Muse and The Golden Key Legacy series by AJ Nuest.

7. Share the Summertime Happiness! Who do you TAG?

The Beginning

I know this is going to sound weird, but my love for books started in the second grade when I read an Encyclopedia Brown book. It was funny and smart. From there I went on to read The Babysitters Club (which even at my age, I’m not ashamed to say I still read both series!) These series allowed me tap into my imagination. I’ve been a reader ever since. Since then I’ve elevated to the Harry Potter series along with both the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and Heroes of Olympus. (I learned that I love Rick Riordan. I didn’t think I would be a fan of any YA series, but with these two series and add The Kane Chronicles series to it… I’m a fan!)

So it came as no surprise to my inner circle that I took a job working in theater! I don’t work in the Literary department, but I have the opportunity to read scripts all day… I’d say that’s pretty close to my dream job! My goal with this is to never stop reading…. and hopefully encourage others to read. Never let your imagination disappear! Books open a whole new world, and I for one can’t wait to explore it!
