Derek Bryer seems to have a perfect life, he has a job he loves and is excellent at, and a life he’s quite content with. One morning, on his way to work, he receives a call… there’s been a murder! But at Joy Universe, it needs to be business as usual. Clear out the suite, make sure the housekeeper is okay, make sure the guests aren’t too inconvenienced. Just when Derek thinks everything is going back to as healthy as it can be, he finds out his entire group of performers are ill. He needs as many dancers, actors, and singers as he can possibly get. Enter Trav, a Broadway star who doesn’t take leading roles. Trav is a triple threat. Immediately upon meeting Derek, he hates Derek. Everything about Derek reminds him of a past he’d rather forget.

After getting to know Derek, they hit it off. Joy Universe is like high school, the two of them dating is all the rave. The two of them have some very tender moments as they realize how similar and how different they are. As they talk through the things that make them who they are, work for the two of them gets very complicated. This is also where the book slowed down for me. The characters break the fourth wall pretty often, but instead of being funny or conversational, it comes off as a bit cheesy at times, which made the story drag. The murder plot didn’t add much to the story for me. You almost forget this is apart of the plot until the nearly the end.

I’ve Got This was a cute story, but it didn’t tick all the boxes for me. I do look forward to other books in the series.
